So I'm curious, what makes the difference between this diet and diets that are genetic based. I've heard that the genetic based diets slightly change a standard balanced diet such as this but give a 30% improvement in weight loss. Wouldn't the genetic based diet be more targeted?

I just entered phase II and have lost 8 pounds, mostly from running to the store to pickup all the exotic spices, etc. I
never had in my cupboards. It's really expensive to fix the
meals in the book and time consuming for someone who isn't
a cook by experience or inclination. The variety allowed in the
next phase looks like a banquet compared to what I just finished but the meals aren't any less complex to prepare. If
South Beach Diet doesn't work for me, it's only because I don't
want to spend all the time shopping for food and preparing the
meals. I noticed the weakness too and had to curb my weight
training a walks somewhat or take a nappy in the afternoon.

In January of 2011 I went on South Beach Diet. I needed to lose 20 lbs. By April 1st of 2011, I had lost 15. I went into phase 3 at that time because I was satisified with my appearance. I went from a size 12 to a size 8. I maintained my 15 lb weight loss with no effort at all because I no longer craved sweets and carbs. For the remainder of 2011, I followed the principles of South Beach Diet and occassionally enjoyed a dessert, Mexican food, Italian Food, or my favorite, pancakes, but for the most part stuck to a carb count of approximately 100 grams a day. I experienced no hunger at all and the diet was very easy to follow (after the initial two weeks).

In January 2012, I decided to go back to phase two to see if I could lose the last five pounds. They are coming off a little slower. I lost 2 lbs in January and 1 in February, but I am making progress.

For anyone considering South Beach Diet, I would say to go for it. You will need a lot of will power and determination to get through phase one, but after that, it gets easier and the food is delicious.

Here is what I eat most days:

Breakfast: 2 eggs, 1 piece of whole grain toast, coffee

Lunch: Salad topped with a protein

Dinner: Any meat I want (I cheat a little here because I like things like ribeye steak and ribs) and a side salad or vegetable.

Snacks: Nuts, peanut butter, yogurt

And the best part: One glass of red wine with dinner every night!
